KIA Champ Into The Arena amateur 5-a-side football tournament concludes in Brazil
(BELO HORIZONTE, BRAZIL) In conjunction with its global partnership to FIFA and as one of the main sponsors of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, Kia Motors Corporation has successfully completed the fourth installment of its exciting annual Champ into the Arena amateur football tournament.
Every year, Kia distributors from all over the world host this exciting tournament in their respective markets in search of the best amateur 5-a-side football team. Winners from each country then move on to the global tournament where they get the opportunity to compete against the winning sides from other participating countries, and ultimately stand a chance to be crowned global champions.
Brazil was the host country for this year’s tournament, and Belo Horisonte set the stage for an exciting and action packed event. Participating countries for 2013 included France, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Jordan, North Iran, Brazil, Argentina and South Africa.
This years representatives for Kia Motors South Africa, was Mobitel a Durban based team that found themselves in Group A, with France and Chile. As their first match was about to start, the South African hopefuls walked onto the pitch with pride and confidence. After the first half, Mobiltel looked promising, leading 4-1. They continued to dominate in the second half, and ended up beating France 6-1.
In their second match, a stronger looking Chilean team raised the bar and team Mobitel found themselves fighting harder to score goals. Many missed opportunities for both sides allowed for a tightly contested match, with the South African’s up 4-3. In the last five seconds Chile scored a goal and equalized the match, which resulted in them moving on to the semi final as they beat France 7-1. The South Africans qualified for the play-offs, facing both Peru and Jordan to secure a spot in the semi-final. They went on to beat Peru 5-1, but lost to overall runners-up Jordan with a final score of 6-3. Jordan was defeated by Brazil in the final by 2-1.
“This was a good learning curve for us,” said Lowell Kinsey, Mobitel defender. “The match against Jordan opened our eyes because it was the first time we played a team like this. We should try out their style of play.”
“We are very disappointed not to have won, as we truly believe we had it in us. Congratulations to team Brazil, they were a very strong side”.
As part of the prize, all teams got to watch the Confederations Cup semi-final between Brazil and Uruguay live at the stadium. As it was many of the team members first trip abroad, team Mobitel were in awe. “We are so excited to have been part of this tournament. This is a dream come true”. “We would like to thank Kia Motors South Africa for this amazing experience – we had the time of our lives”, Kinsey concluded.
