Celebrating the official launch of Kia in Mexico
Kia Motors has officially landed in Mexico. To celebrate this historic moment, a grand ceremony attended by hundreds of government officials, industry leaders and major media, was held in Mexico City. During the event, details on Kia’s market entry plan and construction status of our first manufacturing plant in Mexico were revealed. Retail sales will begin at 21 authorized dealerships in 10 major cities across the country on July 1, 2015 and three import models – Sportage, Sorento, and Cerato – will be available for starters.
The launch of the Kia brand in Mexico is a big step for us, not only because Mexico was one of the world’s last remaining markets Kia had yet to explore, but also because its automotive market is rapidly growing. “Last week the Mexican Association of Automotive Industry reported a year-on-year sales increase of 20.8% from January to May 2015. That’s why we are proud that the Mexican automotive industry will consolidate even more with Kia Motors’ arrival. I congratulate you this meaningful brand launch event and wish you success,” said Juan Pablo De Nigris, Executive Director of ProMexico, during his speech.
Thomas Oh, Kia Motors Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, said in his opening address, “As one of the last remaining major markets in which Kia does not have a sales presence, Mexico will be a driving force behind Kia’s transformation into a global Tier 1 automaker. And we are proud to offer Mexican consumers high-quality vehicles that feature world-class levels of quality, safety and technology, all backed by a warranty that is unmatched in the market.”
Kia’s first manufacturing plant in Mexico, located in Pesqueria, Nuevo León, began construction last October and is expected to commence mass production in mid-2016. Upon completion, this state-of-the-art facility will boast a production capacity of 300,000 units annually, with the popular Cerato Sedan to be the first model to roll off the production line.
Kia Motors plans to continue expanding its national dealer network in Mexico to a total of 65 dealers by 2017. With approximately 3,000 workers to be hired directly by the Kia plant and around 7,000 additional jobs to be created by supplier firms, we look forward to contributing to the continued growth of the Mexican economy while providing stylish and reliable vehicles to Mexican consumers. We will be sure to keep you updated on our growth in Mexico and other parts of the world, so stay tuned!
