The KIA Motors South Africa Head Office in Edenvale put on its community hat on the 10th of May, hosting a CANSA Shavathon as part of the Global Move for Health Day. The day saw many employees and customers come together in support of the cause, and to help raise funds to donate to people battling cancer.

Cancer is already one of the leading causes of death all around the world. In fact, a recent study by medical journal Lancet, published on Health24, “predicts that South Africa could see an increase of 78% in the number of cancer cases by 2030″. That unnerving insight, amongst other reasons, is why KIA Motors saw it fit to raise their hand in support of cancer care and prevention. During the Shavathon, many KIAns gathered to spray their hair with funky colours, to purchase wristbands and bandanas, and to provide donations in cash. Some brave souls even shaved off their hair to show their pledge to raising awareness surrounding cancer.

CANSA takes on a critical role in people’s lives by helping South Africans reduce their cancer risk, helping them to detect it early and facilitating care and support to those who are diagnosed, as well as their loved ones. CANSA has many support pillars to assist with people who may be battling cancer. These include an interim home to patients during the week as well as transport, frequent fundraising events and 24-hour support for all.

CANSA’s aim with these Shavathons is “to show solidarity and unity with our cancer survivors, [that] it’s a case of you are not alone’. As all CANSA events are fundraising initiatives, they encourage involvement in order to generate funds to pump back into the community, which is how they are able to continue providing incredible support to the cancer patients in need.

If you want to support a loved one but do not know how, CANSA representative, Tamara, advised that the organisation offers emotional support from a cancer side, and also offers guidance on how to best support a loved one affected by cancer. She also advised that avoiding tobacco, reducing your sugar intake (sugar feeds cancer), adding more healthy foods to your diet and increasing your water consumption are all small, everyday steps that one can undertake to reduce their cancer risk.

KIA Motors is proud to have been a part of the success of the CANSA Shavathon 2018, and we encourage everyone to be a part of this journey. You can learn more about CANSA and the upcoming events and initiatives here: http://www.cansa.org.za/cancer-research/
